The Potential of Spring for Speech Therapy, Phonics, Reading & Writing
The blossoms and buds that spring brings is the perfect time to evaluate the successes that our children have made this academic year. As a speech-language therapist there is nothing I enjoy more than hearing Kindergartners saying their alphabet letters and reading many sight words, First Graders are so rightfully proud of themselves as they can blend words and Second Graders are writing paragraphs!! How wonderful that Third and Fourth Graders have successfully navigated their ELA state tests. Middle schoolers how about your progress in inferencing? How many books have you read high schoolers – can you pronounce words with many syllables, understand the vocabulary and summarize the main idea, genre, and all characters.
Spring is also the time where it is important to consider altering speech therapy, phonics and reading goals for those students who have experienced challenges during the year and are not meeting their targeted goals. This, therefore, is the time to make educational and therapy plans for the remainder of the year.
